How did I ever survive?

I’ve got this awesome thing called a Droid and it’s basically like having God in my pocket. I don’t remember life before this gadget existed. Can you remember life before you learned to walk? It is my phone, alarm, calendar, internet provider, e-mail, mini ipod, camera, map, event reminder, flashlight, and GPS. I am not able to function without it. Okay, I can but life is significantly more difficult without it and I lose a lot of valuable time.

Today as I nuzzled my little pocket god and tickled the touch screen looking for an address, I suddenly thought of a time when I carried a map in my purse. When I first moved to this city I didn’t know my way around at all. For a ridiculously long time I had a hard time figuring out which way was north. I didn’t know where to find anything (groceries, hardware stores, drugs) so I would just wander and hope I would run into something. I was eighteen in the city by myself with no computer, Internet, TV, calendar, E-mail, Ipod, camera, or friends. I did, however, have a map that couldn’t help me find north. NOW I’ve got friends in low places AND a pocket god.

Do you have any sort of mind blowing technology that has changed your life forever? Perhaps it was the Toast Saber or Lite Brite or this usb powered Shaking Ass. Give me your knowledge oh technically enabled one.
Amen.

I know what you mean about having God in your pocket.

Well..it's kind of in my pocket.

I have a smart phone... my second actually. I had an early HTC Touch I now have an LG, while lacking some of the things my HTC had, it is still better than it was in a lot of ways. Of course, my mind blowing technology is now obsolete... a VCR :) or a phone that will take a message! And don't forget the all important colour television :) lol
God, I'm old!

Back when Heathkit was still in business I built my own TV from parts. Also a bunch of other electronic stuff.

The Shaking Ass doesn't have any junk in the trunk. But what would you expect from Japan.

Mind blowing technology? The DVR, which allows me to back up and re-watch something I didn't catch (usually because someone was making noise) and then I can fast-forward through the commercials. LOVE this feature. It makes me sad that we won't have cable at our next house. (Well, we will for the internet, but not for the TV.)
I find myself trying to rewind and repeat on the car radio... which of course doesn't work. Doesn't NPR realize I'm ADD?

I want a Droid too. Pretty much any smart phone would be awesome, but a Droid would be MOST awesome.

All I have is a crummy little pre-paid phone. :(

I'm jealous.

As much as I bitch about technology in the sense that I think we (in a general sense) have become much more desensitized and prone to the "me me me" aspect of being out and about (people running into me because they're texting while walking down the street...grrrrr), I do love my BlackBerry. For the same reasons you mentioned. GPS, scheduling, email availability, etc.

At the same time, I understand the purpose of things like a kindle (and I know the people love this lightweight option), but part of what I love about reading is the smell and feel of holding a book. I am a library girl. Love seeing worn pages and underlined comments from others while I'm reading. And I hate looking at a screen after a day usually spent....looking at a screen.

I understand the purpose of technology and how much it has made my life better. I just wish people would get their noses out of their devices a little more often.

I would have to say toilet paper. Those damn corn cobs were getting a bit scratchy... ;) (you're a country girl... you'll get that even if nobody else does.)

Last night as I was plugging in my cell phone and my computer I thought, "What would my life be like without these things?" The Universe hasn't sent me an answer yet, but I know that my grad school applications would have been WAY harder and I would use a lot more paper. Hell, I'd be drowning in paper at my apartment.

Nice Reference.

There is an even older gadget that can help one find their way. Some call it "The Sun".
