What do you want to do?

I want to learn how to surf.

I don't know why I wrote that. I don't know where it came from. It wasn't an actual thought of something I NEED to do until a few minutes ago. It doesn't have anything to do with anything. I suddenly think it's really important that within five years I have the opportunity to surf. I don't want to be a surfer or live in the surf community. I just want to try it. To do it. To experience it. I don't know how to make that happen.

I think perhaps there are several things I feel that way about. I would like to do a lot of things within the next five years. Just the other day I found myself feeling pretty shitty because I don't imagine I'll have the opportunity to visit Paris... ever. I don't have a particular fondness for Paris. It was probably someone else bragging... and by bragging I of course mean speaking three words in French that I didn't understand and therefor caused me to fill with jealous rage. Seriously though, who isn't curious to travel to amazing place outside of the bubble you have built around yourself?

I've been writing this blog for well over five years. Damn.

What has changed? What have I gained? There has to be something, right?

Oh God the overwhelming pressure of having a life!

Learn to Surf! ... skip Paris (unless you are in love)

Learning to surf would probably be more fun than Paris. I might only be saying that because I will never go to Paris either. But, I do have to find a way to go to Ireland someday. Wanna go there with me?

I've worked long and hard on this bubble dammit! Why would I want to leave now?

You don't want to go to Paris. It is full of French people and they are rude and smell bad. As for leaving your bubble, get a passport and then look for opportunities to get work visas. Do it while you are young, because countries and employers don't want foreign works that are old unless they have a skill that is in very high demand - think Dr's etc. Of course, my giving this same advise to my handsome young vet a few years ago, cost me a good vet :( In the words of Nike (or their ad agency) just do it.

I've done both and I can assure you that surfing is the most fun. Paris is fine, but the French are incredibly rude and refuse to talk to you in French unless you are fluent in the Parisian dialect. They'd prefer if you spoke to them in English, quite frankly, and don't care about the effort you're making. Also, everything is too expensive. A one course meal in a bar can cost 80 Euros in some places.

I took a surf lesson once and I liked it. I only just managed to stand on the board once before the lesson was over, it's hard work but rewarding.

Sorry, I don't mean to brag. I bet if you named any other goals I doubt I'd have done them.

I want to go to Paris, despite the giant rats and frou-frou pooh-pooh; it's just the landscape behind so many of the artworks and books I love.

Try surfing! But don't wear a bikini because it'll shred up your tummy.

You have no need to be jealous of anyone, ever...I know that never stops anyone but really--I don't know how you could get more awesome and still be a real person.

let's go in september. it's by far the less surprising way to get eaten by a shark. if i expect it, it will be less traumatic.

If you really feel a need to visit Notre Dame, or you love art museums (and the kind of art found in the Lourve and those other famous museums in Paris) then keep it on the ol' Bucket list. Otherwise? There are more interesting places to visit.

Did you know that some of the big cruise ships now have surfing on-board? Sounds like a great vacation opportunity to me!

I agree that surfing is an excellent item to have on your bucket list. (It's not on mine, but I'm a big chicken when it comes to speed or untamed water. And really? Both of them together would frighten me to death!)

life is pretty cumbersome i think.. sometimes i feel like im dragging a clumsy bag of clothes around - not on my back, but just my body. Change is cool when we let it happen. what if we didnt resist it? That'd be different, things would happen a lot quicker prob. Surfing, hmm, you could try it out in the hamptons, although you'll need a wetsuit or whatever they wear. do you like sharks? and sex wax?

who says anything has to have changed? if you want it to it will. but just because nothing has doesnt mean its a bad thing. gained? i'd say an outlet. as long as the therapy it provides still excites you then theres the merit in the last 5 years.
